In partnership with our major rental clients Pete’s Big TVs, digiLED DLP LED screen technology featured in the creative stage design at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, held in the acclaimed Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
A combination of digiLED DLPi 3.9mm and DLPo 5.9mm LED video screen products starred in the set, collaboratively created by production designer David Edwards, Jr. of D Before E, Inc. and art direction by Anthony Bishop of AWB Design, LLC. Bishop and PBTV have worked together previously on several projects, but this was the first time providing LED screens for an MTV movie awards event.
A mammoth 80-tile-wide curved screen featured upstage as well as LED covering the inside, and outsides, of entry tunnels that were built into the screen. PBTV’s inventory of digiLED’s versatile DLP range of products allowed the team to fulfil the creative team’s innovative design ideas. By utilising the Variable Angle Connector, DLP modules have the capability of curving up to 15˚ in convex and concave directions.
In addition, PBTV incorporated digiLED’s Right Angle Connector and the new mini tiles (125mm wide) enabling 90˚ attachments for seamless video presentation, wrapping content around both sides of the set’s tunnels.
Guy Benjamin, PBTV Vice-President, explained: “These mini tiles are a quarter of a standard tile in width, which allowed us to make right angles for the tunnel effects. Normally, you’d see the dark edge of a video tile where a right angle is formed, with these new mini tiles you can make a seamless right angle with smooth video wrapping around the edge.”
digiLED DLPi 3.9mm modules followed the curves and covered the auditorium’s opera boxes with high-resolution video content.
“Pete’s was the right company for the MTV Movie & TV Awards production, because we were able to make a screen this big with the curves and the video-covered tunnels,” Benjamin said. “We really had never done anything on this scale, but were successful due to the flexibility of these new DLP products from digiLED. We used the mini tiles from the face of the screen onto the tunnel as well as on the inside and up into the ceiling, so we were really using a lot of the new features of this product line.”
The company has experienced considerable expansion in its presence on the West Coast. The 2017 MTV Movies & TV Awards show is the latest project in an increasing portfolio of events PBTV has covered with its range of our LED screen technology in the Los Angeles area for the events and television broadcast market.
Benjamin added: “We have been seriously expanding our inventory of LED product and have been putting more of it in LA. PBTV has the technicians and the equipment to support your next creative applications.”
