Culture House Sunderland marks a new chapter for the city. Built on Keel Square as part of the wider regeneration of Riverside Sunderland, the £27 million building replaces a cluster of tired buildings with something very different: a new civic space designed around learrning, creativity, technology & the cities rich ship building histrory & culture.
At its heart is still a library, with around 40,000 books, local studies & archives. But alongside the traditional library spaces are digital art galleries, podcast studios, child learn & play, an Inventors Lab, a 360-degree immersion space & facilities for creating & experiencing digital content.
The building brings Sunderland’s rich historic past & future together. At the centre of it all is the main atrium where 36 digiLED LED screens help artists create awe & wonder.

The first thing visitors see as they enter the venue is a four-storey atrium, with a stunning sculptural spiral staircase rising through its centre.
Around the atrium, 36 digiLED VU Q 3.9mm indoor LED screens cover 255 square metres of wall space..
Rather than looking like conventional digital signage, the screens have been designed into the architecture. Their different cabinet configurations follow the shape & proportions of the building, creating a digital mosaic across all four floors. It is a deliberate contrast.
Books, archives, timber & brick represent the physical history of the city. The LED introduces movement, colour & the ability to tell a changing story.

The architecture presented a challenge. This was not a space where a standard rectangular LED wall could simply be installed.
VU Q’s mixed-size cabinet splicing allowed the LED to work around the atrium’s openings & viewing balconies, with 3.9mm being chosen for its great balance between resolution & exceptional contrast.
Front service access also makes the displays practical to maintain within a busy public building.
All 255 SQM are driven from a single NovaStar H5 processor over fibre, keeping the processing & infrastructure behind the scenes simple.
The AV technology in the building is subtle, yet it’s everywhere – the mark of superb breif, & flawless delivery.

Immersive LED screens with digiLED ZEUS® energy saving technology
Culture House Sundeland was designed with lofty sustainability goals, so energy consumption was an important part of the LED specification.
All 36 LED screens use digiLED ZEUS®, our intelligent power managment tool. When the venue shuts it doors & powers down for the night, the LED screens use ZERO power.
Did you know? LED screens left in standby (black screen) still burn as much as 30% of their MAX power – whilst doing nothing!
