Cleveland Cavaliers Power Portal: Two LED products, one immersive canvas

Creating an immersive experience at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse

For fans entering Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland, Ohio, the experience begins before they reach their seats.

As part of the arena’s $185 million transformation, the home of the Cleveland Cavaliers introduced the Power Portal – a 39-foot immersive AV tunnel connecting the atrium with the arena concourse. Visitors are surrounded by dynamic LED content and immersive audio as they move through the space, turning their arrival into part of the event itself.

At the centre of the experience is approximately 2,196 sqft of 2.6 mm digiLED technology, spanning the walls, ceiling and curved architecture of the tunnel.

Creating one continuous digital canvas across such different surfaces required more than one LED solution and, crucially, they needed to work together without disrupting the immersive effect.

Two LED screen products, one seamless display

The Power Portal’s combination of large flat surfaces and sweeping curves required different LED technologies for different parts of the architecture.

digiTHIN HD was used across the tunnel’s walls and ceiling, while digiFLEX provided the flexibility needed around the curved sections. Both products share the same 2.6mm pixel pitch, helping maintain consistency as content moves between the different surfaces.

The real challenge was making two different LED products look like one. Any visible variation between the flat and flexible displays could have interrupted the immersive effect. Instead, the two technologies blend seamlessly together, allowing content to flow across the walls, around the curves and overhead as one continuous digital canvas.

LED technology designed around the architecture

Each product brought different characteristics to the Power Portal. At just 54mm deep, digiTHIN HD provided a slim solution for the flat surfaces, with four independently adjustable Z-axis screws on each chassis helping achieve precise alignment.

For the curved areas, digiFLEX could follow the shape of the architecture while maintaining wide viewing angles – particularly valuable as visitors experience the display from changing positions as they move through the tunnel.

Rather than forcing the architecture to accommodate a conventional flat LED screen, the combination of digiFLEX and digiTHIN allowed different display technologies to respond to different areas of the space while maintaining the appearance of one continuous LED display.

An LED canvas designed for an immersive experience

The Power Portal isn’t simply a large-format LED display. It forms part of the visitor journey through Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

Its audiovisual content can change depending on what is taking place within the arena, allowing the space to become part of the experience for Cavaliers games, concerts and other events.

The portal has also become more than a route between two areas of the venue. Following its introduction, the Cavaliers’ Chief Information Officer described visitors stopping within the space to take photographs and selfies, turning it into a gathering point as fans enter the arena.

Across approximately 2,196 sqft of 2.6mm LED, digiTHIN HD and digiFLEX perform different jobs, but visually work together as one. It demonstrates how selecting the right LED technology for different architectural requirements doesn’t have to compromise the consistency of the finished display.

Two products. Different formats. One seamless, immersive LED canvas.
