digiLED helps transform Moynihan Train Hall with large-format LED displays

A landmark LED installation in the heart of New York City

In 2020, digiLED delivered 2,992 square feet of LED screens for the stunning new Moynihan Train Hall in New York City.

The Train Hall forms part of the major redevelopment of the historic James A. Farley Post Office building, expanding the capacity of Penn Station in Manhattan. It serves both the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Amtrak, the intercity rail service connecting major cities including Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, Wilmington and New York City.

The main train hall is now dominated by four giant 3.9mm digiTILE MAX LED screens, with a further eight 1.5mm digiTHIN HD LED screens positioned prominently throughout the station.

Overcoming natural light with high-brightness LED screens

Natural light pours into the hall through a massive 92-foot-high skylight ceiling, which also features art installations from some of the world’s most celebrated artists.

The abundance of daylight presented a unique technical challenge. digiLED carefully analysed the position of the sun throughout the day to determine how light would fall across the LED screens at different times.

To maintain optimal visibility and overcome glare, digiLED outdoor louvres were installed to provide shading for the four main digiTILE MAX LED screens overlooking the hall.

An innovative LED solution for a common rail industry problem

A widespread industry problem was also addressed at Moynihan: the attraction of magnetic dust to LED screen surfaces in rail locations.

Historically, as can be seen in many transport hubs around the world, ferrous material from trains is attracted to the magnets of an LED screen, leaving dark blotches across the screen surface.

In what is believed to be a world first, digiLED created an innovative magnetic blocking design for the Moynihan project, resulting in a screen surface that experienced no magnetic fields. Without the presence of magnets, no ferrous dust was collected on the screen surface.

Technical expertise behind the Moynihan Train Hall LED screens

With international travel restrictions in place throughout 2020, digiLED’s technical team was unable to travel to New York, requiring an alternative approach to onsite support.

Using a combination of video calls and remote communication, digiLED worked closely with the onsite team throughout the installation. Tom Mudd, digiLED’s Head of Technical, provided remote assistance with programming and commissioning to help successfully finalise the project.

Following years of continuous operation, the image on the Moynihan screens remains clear, bright and free from the blotches seen on so many other LED displays.

This involves creating products from scratch, with deep knowledge of every raw component, hands-on management of the supply chain and production, & real expertise in product design, structural engineering & quality control.

Over the years we've delivered many of the world's most high-profile and technically demanding LED screen installations.

digiLED was born in the UK, and our global headquarters remains just outside London - home to a cutting-edge showroom, repair centre, warehousing, training and design hub.

We also operate a dedicated team in the United States from our Las Vegas Pixel Depot Showroom, which includes repair facilities, training spaces and warehousing.

Beyond that we maintain offices and teams in Japan, across Europe, and at our digiLED Tech Hub in Shenzhen.

We deliberately target the top 20% of the market – the projects that demand the very best in terms of quality, reliability and longevity.

That means using only top-tier components and building LED screens to the highest possible standard. Yes, it can make us more expensive than the mass-market options, but that’s exactly why we’re the right choice for the jobs that really matter.

Our sweet spot is the complex, the custom, the non-flat: screens that wrap around curves, climb walls, bend corners, and create something truly unforgettable.

We specialise in:

We’re more than a supplier – we’re your safety net.

We stay close to the process with boots on the ground: hand-picking the finest components, working with only the best production partners, and personally overseeing R&D, prototyping, QC, factory acceptance testing (FAT), logistics and project delivery.

It’s why our customers don’t just work with us once – they keep coming back.

digiLED ZEUS® is the world's first patented technology that completely eliminates wasted standby power on LED screens. When the screen is black, it uses literally ZERO watts.
